Protest

Hong Kong

After the prominent Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong was arrested by Hong Kong police in June 2019 the protesters realised it was better to have a leaderless movement. The faceless wave of protests which were gathering momentum across the autonomous region meant the police were not able to pinpoint who the official leader or instigator was. At one point, 1.7million people flooded the streets of Hong Kong in the hope of having their demands met - which included the removal of the controversial Extradition Bill as well as accountability for police brutality.

These pictures were taken on the front-lines during violent clashes between protesters and police on October 20th 2019.

This series was made possible with a portable black back-drop and the assistance and bravery of Fred Wong.
